Liatris spicata produceert stijve, rechtopstaande stengels met veel bladeren. Bladeren lineair, onderste iets breder, bovenste steeds smaller. De plant bereikt, afhankelijk van de soort, een hoogte van 60-90 cm. De bloemen van de verschillende soorten zijn lilaroze of wit, zittend, verzameld in dichte, cilindrische aren, bloeien van boven naar beneden en bereiken een lengte van 15 tot 30 cm. De bloemen dragen honing en verschijnen van juli tot september. Ze trekken vlinders aan met hun kleur, geur en nectar. Deze vaste plant verlangt verse, matig vochtige grond en een zonnige standplaats. De plant wordt gekweekt in bloemperken en in naturalistische beplantingen. De afgesneden bloeiwijzen zijn geschikt voor boeketten en blijven lang houdbaar in een vaas. De plant moet beschermd worden tegen knaagdieren, die graag de knolwortels opeten.
