Die Küchenschelle ist eine mehrjährige Pflanze, die im frühen Frühling wächst. In der ersten Wachstumsphase sind die Blätter, wie die gesamte Pflanze, seidig, weich behaart, später mehr oder weniger kahl. Der Blütentrieb, der in einer einzelnen, glockenförmigen Blüte endet, die nach oben gerichtet oder leicht geneigt ist, erreicht während der Blüte eine Höhe von 15–20 cm und wird während der Fruchtbildung bis zu 40 cm hoch. Die Blüte ist je nach Sorte weiß, rot oder violett mit gelber Mitte, erreicht einen Durchmesser von 6–8 cm und ist sehr attraktiv für Bienen. Beim Öffnen zeigen die Blüten nach oben. Die Blütezeit ist im April und Mai. Küchenschellen sind in jeder Phase ihres Wachstums, von den schönen Blütenknospen über interessante, entwickelte Blüten bis hin zu bezaubernden, flauschigen Fruchtständen, eine Zierde für jeden Garten.
