Płomyk szydlasty tworzy zbitą darń z płożących się pędów, o zimozielonych liściach. Liście szydlaste, sztywne, długości 12-18 mm są delikatnie owłosione. Kwiaty o klinowatych płatkach korony, zebrane są po 3-6 w baldachogrona, w zależności od odmiany różnią się zabarwieniem. Mogą być białe, różowe, liliowe, czerwone, jednobarwne lub z oczkiem. Bylina osiąga wysokość do 15 cm. Ze względu na swój pokrój Phlox subulata znajduje zastosowanie na rabatach, w ogrodzie skalnym, do obsadzania murków. Stanowi też cenną roślinę okrywową dla intensywnych, mniejszych założeń zieleni. Może służyć do obsadzania większych powierzchni zamiast trawnika. Dobrze rośnie na stanowiskach ciepłych i nasłonecznionych. Gleba winna być średnio wilgotna, zdrenowana i żyzna.
